okay, I have the most exciting news so far in my blog's history!!
My braces are going on October 26th.
Yay!
I made an appointment with Dr. Arango (arangoorthodontics.com) and everything went really well! He was very helpful and informative, and he really took a lot of worry off my shoulders. He told me to try not to worry about finding a surgeon and everything for the moment, and that I should focus on the braces part for the time being. He said that when the time comes he'll give me a list of surgeons that he's worked with before and help me try and work things out with Cigna.
He uses something called the Damon system, which looks pretty cool. Does anyone know anything about this?
Unfortunately, the braces will cost me 240 dollars a month for 12 months. I'm paying 2400 of the total 5000 dollar bill.
I was so happy to finally get this started I almost cried.
They did x-rays and molds...It was weird to see my x-rays on the computer screen (I've never seen them before). It made it "real", so to speak, to see my jaw positioned so incorrectly on the computer. It makes me wonder what happened...why did my face grow like this? Why did my top jaw develop so narrowly? Questions to ponder...
Anyway, yay! I'm going to look silly with braces, though...

Damon brackets are the new-fangled technology that doesn't use ligatures to attach the archwire to the bracket. Allison has a good picture on her page right now. The cool things about them are that comparatively to the older brackets they themselves are smaller and because they don't use ligatures there is less friction which means the teeth move to the archwire faster and easier. I'll be getting these soon too.
Ooops! Aimee has the picture of the Damon brackets, not Allison. My faux pas.
Yay! Congratulations!! I just had my Damons put on last Tuesday. I can't say I am too happy about them at the moment though. :) Once my lips and teeth aren't killing me, I might have a better attitude. It sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I am paying $8500.00 for my braces! Good luck and enjoy flossing without braces for the time being!

That's great news, Melissa! $2,400 isn't bad. I paid $8,500 for my braces.
Don't worry about 'looking silly'. The self-consciousness goes away pretty quickly. Well, in about a month's time... :-)

I've just came across your blog. I too have asked myself the same questions about my narrow top, and overgrown bottom jaw. Looks as if we are in the same boat! In school I'd wear my hair down ALWAYS.
